I always wondered what the incredible theme song to https://cocaineandrhinestones.com/ was and this week amongst all the great posts and tributes about Dolly I learned that it is the 45 of Jolene played at 33 rpm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doz1QJ7LwjA.
That this works really well even at the wrong speed is apparently as well known as it is that the Dark Side of the Moon is a great Wizard of Oz companion track.
What a fun pickin’ pattern. I’m gonna finally learn how to play it.
In book two, Balle introduced us to others also trapped in the 18th of November, as scaffolding for the continued exploration of the supremacy of conviction over nature, contrasting the lived experience of seasons and relationships in book II against a literal thief of time (the mysterious bicycle rider). Now in book III, the new characters are trapped in convictions of their age: a rebellious teenager, a mindful 20-something, the narrator whose own convictions they find sentimental, and her older compatriot coming out of a mid-life crisis of career and parenting regrets, as well as literal toothless wisdom, in the form of a lecturing professor not of their cohort. The speculative closing on yet another jerk forward in plot more than doubling their cohort remind us all that this is a serial and you’ll have to read the next one in the series to find out what happens.
About fifteen years ago some friends and I started signing our posts dictated but not read, or DBNR, as a bit, about how people with power casually make decisions impacting the rest of us with whatever information is on hand and without asking for more beforehand, or particularly caring how things turn out as a result, or, indeed and more literally, reading their own dictation.
So, it is fun as a poster’s defensive opening, “do not reply, I don’t care, I didn’t even read it myself.”
We got bored of the observation and moved on. It looks like the last time I did it, without much enthusiasm, was five years ago?
Little did we know.
We won lottery tickets for the last Stern Grove show of season to see Al Green. As usual, the bike valet was excellent. Hitting sunshine on the wiggle at Duboce Park after a few hours in the fog was so, so nice.

We had an opportunity to go on a hike without the seven year old so we biased for elevation that he would not enjoy. It was a beautiful day to be in the shade of a northern California redwood forest along a creek.

gravely (@gravely@mastodon.social)getting a lot of “infosec discourse” vibes from the shadows on the cave wall this morning as the sun rises so I’m wagging my finger in the direction of the entrance to the cave ⃔ ☝🏼⃕Mastodon (opens in a new tab)Trying to find a gd post I know I made and it isn’t this one or the nonsense I boosted moments ago and I’m giving up on finding what I wanted but anyway, imho, this finger wag should be a standard ligature or whatever.
My mom has never acknowledged the times I used to sneak out of the house to do crimes. I’m pretty sure she knew or at least knows now (thanks, Sis) but she sure doesn’t post about it. Respect.
It was fun how everyone rallied around Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains" yesterday. Someone cool in chat suggested Henry Kuttner and C. L. Moore’s “Vintage Season” ( https://www.fadedpage.com/showbook.php?pid=20220847) as another great story-about-a-house and I enjoyed it last night.
Vintage SeasonEverybody seemed to want the old house during May—and seemed willing to pay fantastic prices for the privilege. Strange tourists they were, too. The Café Society of another time. The 1992 American film Timescape, also titled Grand Tour: Disaster in Time, was loosely based on Vintage Season, though with a happy ending substituted for the somber conclusion of Catherine L. Moore's original.--Wikipedia.fadedpage.com (opens in a new tab)TWCSR reminded me of PKD’s Autofac ( https://www.philipdick.com/mirror/websites/pkdweb/short_stories/Autofac.htm), which made for a pretty good if only kinda sorta related (as per) episode of Electric Dreams ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6902176/), which I really wish had expanded into a modern day Amazing Stories. Neither, unfortunately, are quite old enough to be able to share directly.

After returning home to see if family was grounding, Tara invests in believing that seasons are matters of projection and will rather than passive to the abstraction and metaphysics of calendars. Who is to say? I enjoyed most of this section in two sittings and was bummed when that era was exhausted and moved past, albeit with a bit of unexpected plot and a suspenseful crises left somewhat open ended, as with the encounter with the coin seller couple in Book I. I wondered if I was in on a Patricia Lockwood style joke after when Tara then returned to the roman coin from Book I and more-than-dwelled on thinkin’ about the Roman Empire, as one does, for a while. Probably not, but haha, what if? The cliffhanger has me looking forward to Book III but the meat of the story is simply engaging with the idea that there isn’t much space between those days when maybe a bit of petrichor or surprise plant growth makes you think out of time, of a day in a season opposite from the one you are in. Delightful.
